Take a Shot with Basketball Scholarships

As with many sports, basketball scholarships at the top colleges and universities require an exceptional level of talent to catch recruiters’ attention. Many times these scholarships require not only a high level of talent, but also excellent academic records. While NCAA-controlled scholarships are the most desirable and competitive, there are also a number of other options for students hoping to turn their basketball abilities into college funding.

Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship Award

These basketball scholarships are awarded each year to a female college basketball player who is interested in earning a law degree. To apply for these $1,000 scholarships, students must be nominated by a head coach of a WBCA member school. Nominations must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation, individual game statistics for the current year, declared major, and GPA. For nomination forms and further information, see the scholarship site at www.wbca.org.

Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship Award

Another of the great basketball scholarships offered by the WBCA, the Robin Roberts awards provide $4,000 a year to a senior female college basketball player who is planning to earn a graduate degree and pursue a career in sports journalism. Eligible applicants must be nominated by a WBCA head coach. Nominations must be accompanied by individual game statistics from the current year, college major and GPA, and a letter of recommendation. Details and nomination forms can be found at www.wbca.org.

NAIA Scholarships

NAIA basketball scholarships are available to qualifying players in two divisions and in both men’s and women’s basketball. In order to be eligible, students must be admitted to a NAIA college or university under equal or higher standards than regular students. Candidates must also meet two of these three requirements: 18 ACT or 860 SAT score, GPA of 2.0 or higher, or graduate in the top half of the class. Students who were homeschooled or who earned a GED may also be accepted if they meet the associated requirements. NAIA scholarships may cover full or partial costs of attendance. To apply, you must pay a $65 registration fee and register on the site at www.playnaia.org.

NJCAA Scholarships

The NJCAA basketball scholarships are perfect for students who may have been overlooked by the NAIA or NCAA and who intend to attend a junior college before transferring to a four-year school. To qualify for these scholarships, students must be graduates of accredited U.S. high schools or must meet alternative requirements, depending upon the student’s status. In addition, NJCAA scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.0 GPA and meet credit requirements to maintain the scholarship. Scholarships are available in three divisions. Interested students must pay a $60 registration fee. Full information and details are available at www.njcaa.org.

These and other basketball scholarships can help you pay for college while playing the sport you love. Most of these scholarships are highly competitive, so be prepared to prove that you are the best choice by building an impressive resume of academic achievement, athletic talent, and community service.
