Lacrosse is gaining in popularity in the United States, particularly on the East Coast. As the sport gains followers, increasing attention is being given to skilled lacrosse players. While the best players may be able to get a NCAA scholarship to go to college, that is not the only option available. There are many excellent lacrosse scholarships available to lacrosse players who may need some help paying for a college education. Michael Breschi Scholarship
These lacrosse scholarships are available through US Lacrosse to two graduating high school seniors who are the sons or daughters of a US Lacrosse coach, and intend to go to college. Qualifying parents must be high school or college coaches and full-time employees of a school. The scholarship fund was started in 2007 to honor the son of University of North Carolina’s head coach of men’s lacrosse. Recipients of the scholarship are responsible for checking with colleges to see if acceptance of the award affects financial aid or other regulations. AYLA Willie Gateau Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was created in honor of past AYLA coach and volunteer, Willie Gateau. Each year, these scholarships are provided to high school seniors who have played at least one spring season with AYLA. Eligible applicants must have high achievement in academics, leadership, extracurricular activities, and community service. In addition, all recipients must meet basic NCAA eligibility requirements. Interested students may apply in January of their senior high school year. Scholarship applications are available at www.youthlax.org and must be submitted along with a resume, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a typed essay by March 1.
NJ Bagataway Spirit of the Game Awards
These scholarships provide $1,000 each to two high school winners and one unsung hero each year. Eligible nominees must have had an impact on the sport of lacrosse, but cannot be officials or coaches. Nominees should demonstrate teamwork, sportsmanship, ethics, leadership, and commitment. Nominations must be made through a 500-word or less description and can be made at www.njlacrosse.org.
Christina Clarke Genco Foundation
The CCG Foundation provides the Revolution Lacrosse Scholarships to female players who exhibit positive values. Applicants will be evaluated based on the extent of experience in lacrosse and other team sports, the level of commitment to community service and advancement, and financial need.
