Swimming Scholarships

Many of the biggest swimming scholarships are dependent on skill, especially for NCAA teams. What about those who are skilled and dedicated to swimming but are not at NCAA level? Are they left out completely? The answer is a resounding ‘no’. There are a large number of swimming scholarships available, many of which require nothing more than a dedication to the sport and good potential as a student. If you are an avid swimmer, these excellent scholarships are designed to give you a chance to use your passion to earn college money. The Zale Parry Scholarship

The Zale Parry Scholarship program provides $3,000 in scholarship money to each recipient along with a $500 travel expense voucher to the Scholarship Presentation Ceremony. Awards are made based on merit. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, must have diver certification, and must be citizens of North America. To apply, students must submit the completed application along with a resume or curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation from experts on credentials and academic achievement, career goals essay, and a copy of a Diving Certification card by July 31. University of Georgia

The University of Georgia Athletic Scholarship Endowment Program provides scholarships to student athletes at UGA. The program offers a variety of swimming scholarships including:

  • Lisa Coole Memorial Women’s Swimming Scholarship – This scholarship is in honor of the late Lisa Coole, who won 19 All-American and two NCAA championships. This award is available to a member of the UGA women’s team.
  • Jack Bauerle Swimming and Diving Scholarship – This scholarship is in honor of Coach Jack Bauerle and is presented to a women’s swimming and diving team.
  • Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholarship Endowment – This is another scholarship available to a member of the UGA women’s swim team and is awarded in honor of the 1999 Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Title.
  • B.W. “Bump” Gabrielsen Men’s Swimming and Diving Endowment – This scholarship is established in memory of former coach Bump Gabrielson and provides an award annually to a member of the men’s swimming and diving team.
  • Bernard B. Ramsey Scholarships – These annual scholarships are awarded to ten of the finest scholar-athletes at the University of Georgia. Both men and women are eligible.
  • Morton S. Hodgson, Jr. Men’s Swimming Scholarship Endowment – This scholarship is in the memory of Morton S. Hodgson, Jr., an outstanding athlete and student at UGA. The annual award is available to a men’s swimming team member who excels in competition and in academics.

LeRoy LaViolette Swimming Scholarship

This $500 scholarship is available to a current or former member of the Howard Suamico Storm Breakers swim team who will be pursuing a post-secondary degree. It is preferable that applicants continue to pursue swimming after high school, but this is not a requirement for receiving an award. To be eligible, students must be graduating from high school or attending college with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students may reapply for all four years of college if they meet the program requirements. To apply, students must submit the application found at www.hssb-wi.org by postal mail before the March 8 deadline.

The Jennifer Leigh Smith Swimming Scholarship

These $2,500 scholarships are targeted toward swimmers in South Carolina who have a passion for the sport, but who are unable to meet the demands of highly competitive senior swimming. The awards are designed for students who have the talent and commitment required for college swimming, but who are not likely to receive an athletic scholarship. To apply, students must complete the formal application and submit it by March 1 with three letters of recommendation, a copy of high school transcripts, and a short essay on the applicant’s desire to swim in college. Kim Miller Synchronized Swimming Scholarship

These scholarships are available to athletes in the East Zone who are registered with U.S. Synchronized Swimming. Eligible applicants must be graduating high school seniors who have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA for all four years of high school. In addition, applicants must demonstrate service and leadership and be entering college in the fall following graduation and be participating in synchronized swimming. To apply, students must submit the formal application along with high school transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a personal essay by February 15. Applications must be submitted by postal mail and are available at www.heronettes.org.

Brinton Family Girl’s Swimming Scholarship

These scholarships are available to a female swimmer from Durango High School who has completed four years of competition swimming at Durango. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate leadership qualities and have at least a 3.5 GPA, financial need, and moral character. To apply, candidates must submit the official scholarship application along with a letter of interest, current transcripts, and two letters of recommendation by April 1. Recipients will receive $1,000, paid directly to the college or university of choice. Applications are available at www.dfee.net.

Mary Ruth Bowman Boy’s Swimming Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a top male junior or senior swimmer at Durango High School who possesses leadership, sportsmanship, and improvement in swimming ability. To apply, students must submit a completed application along with a letter of interest and college intentions, current transcripts, and two letters of recommendation by April 1. Award amounts vary $1,200 and $1,400 and are paid directly to the school of choice. Applications and further details are available at www.dfee.net.

Michigan Masters Swimming Scholarship Program

This annual scholarship provides college financial assistance in the amount of $1,000 to eligible Michigan Masters family members. To be eligible, students must be attending a full- or part-time undergraduate program with at least a 3.0 GPA. Financial need and hardship may be considered when making awards. To apply, students must submit a completed application along with transcripts of records, a short biography, the name of the institution attending, and three letters of recommendation by postal mail. Recipients may renew awards for up to three years if funds are available and all eligibility criteria are met. For applications and further information, visit www.michiganmasters.com.
