Many employers prefer to hire candidates who can communicate easily with companies and officials around the world, so getting a foreign language degree can do a great deal to boost your employment and earning outlook. If you are prepared to study foreign languages, there are many foreign language scholarships that can help you cut costs while earning your degree.

DAAD German Studies Research Grant

The DAAD foreign language scholarships are available to undergraduates who are at least in the junior year of a German Studies major or minor. Applicants must have completed at least two years of college German and at least three German Studies courses to be eligible for nomination. To receive the $1,500 to $2,500 research grants, students must be citizens of the United States or Canada and must be enrolled full-time. To apply, students must submit a completed DAAD application, a curriculum vitae, and a detailed description of the project along with a budget statement. Students must also supply a list of German courses taken, two letters of recommendation, official undergraduate transcripts, and the DAAD language evaluation form. DAAD Undergraduate Scholarships

The DAAD foreign language scholarships are made available to students who are currently in the second or third year of college and will be juniors or seniors during their Germany stay. Applicants must be seeking financial support for a four to ten month stay in Germany during the academic year, must demonstrate academic and personal excellence, and must have a well-defined plan for research, internship, or study in Germany. Applicants must submit the DAAD language evaluation form, explain the significance of their German project to their overall goals, and must return to their home countries to complete a bachelor’s degree program. NSEP Boren Undergraduate Scholarships

To qualify for the Boren foreign language scholarships, applicants must be citizens of the United States, graduates of high school or GED holders, and attending an undergraduate degree program at an accredited institution. Students must be applying to study abroad in a program that meets their institution’s standards and requirements. To apply, students must contact a Boren representative on campus, submit the scholarship application, and provide all required materials by June 1. Applications and details are available at

GRCF Audrey L. Wright Scholarship

These foreign language scholarships are available to Kent County residents who have lived in the area for at least three years, and who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education or foreign language. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and a demonstrated financial need to qualify. For application information, visit the official scholarship website at

Kor Memorial Scholarship

The Klingon Language Institute offers these foreign language scholarships to encourage students to earn degrees in language study. While applicants are not required to be familiar with Klingon or another constructed language, innovation and creativity are preferred. Winners will receive a $500 award each year of undergraduate or graduate study. To be eligible, students must be nominated by a department head or dean. Nominees must be in a full-time program leading to a language study degree and must show academic accomplishment. Once nominated, students must submit a nominating letter along with two other letters of recommendation, a brief statement of educational goals, and a resume or curriculum vitae by June 1.
