Education is for everyone, including those who may have an impairment. Those who are visually impaired can get help paying for a college education through a variety of scholarships. Although it may seem difficult to find the right scholarships, they are available. Try these great opportunities as a starting point:

The American Council of the Blind provides assistance to legally blind students who are studying full time at a college, university, or vocational school. The Council provides 24 various scholarships from which to choose. To be eligible for these scholarships, you must have a 3.3 or higher GPA and be legally blind in both eyes.

Association of Blind Citizens Scholarship Program

This scholarship fund awards $10,000 worth of scholarships to qualified applicants each year. To apply, you must submit high school transcripts as well as those from college, if applicable. You must also write a 300-500 word essay telling how the scholarship funds will help you achieve your educational dreams. The essay must be submitted via email or postal mail on a CD.

American Foundation for the Blind

Scholarships from this organization can range from $500 to $1,500. To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen and have proof that you are legally blind. In addition, you must submit an essay outlining your goals, your work experience, and your intended use of the funds. In addition, you must submit official transcripts and proof that you have been accepted to a college or university.
