Google is sponsoring a scholarship program to honor one of the driving forces behind encouraging women and minorities to enter technology and computer fields. This pioneer, Dr. Anita Borg, devoted her life to changing the way we perceive technology and to breaking down barriers that keep underrepresented people from entering these dynamic fields. The Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship Fund is designed to encourage women to enter careers in technology and computing and to become leaders and role models in this field.
About the Scholarship
Recipients of the Anita Borg Scholarship will be awarded with financial assistance for an academic year. Scholarships will be given to a group of female students at both the undergraduate and graduate level and will be based on the applicants’ demonstrated leadership and academic backgrounds. All finalists and winners will also be invited to attend the annual Scholars’ Retreat at Google’s Mountain View, California retreat. This retreat will include speakers, workshops, breakout sessions, social activities, and panelists over the course of three days. Students at the retreat will also have the chance to tour the Googleplex and San Francisco Bay Area, where they will get to know computer science students from around the nation.
In order to be eligible for scholarship consideration, applicants must be female students who are in the senior undergraduate year or are in a graduate program at an accredited college or university in the United States. Applicants must be enrolled in a computer engineering, computer science, or related technical field and must be attending school full time during the 2013-2014 academic year. In addition, applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent. All U.S. citizens and permanent residents as well as international students who meet the requirements may apply.
This scholarship fund is a global program. As such, you should visit the Google scholarships page for more information on opportunities for you if you are attending a college or university outside the United States during the 2013-2014 school year.
