Left Handed Scholarships
Almost 15 percent of the world’s population are made up of left handed people, as compared to only 10 percent 20 years ago. There is little doubt to lefties that being left-handed can be challenging, especially since most of the world is designed to function best for right-handed people. However, being left-handed is not without its rewards, since lefties earn around 26% more annually than those who are right-handed. Why not celebrate this uniqueness? There is now a scholarship available just for those who are left-handed. While there are many scams floating around that promise to link you with a variety of left-handed scholarships for college, in truth, there is currently only one and it is highly competitive. This scholarship is available only to students of Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania.
Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Scholarship Program
In 1919, Frederick and Mary Beckley were both students in tennis lessons at Juniata College. Since they were both left-handed, the instructor decided to make them practice partners. The couple found that they quickly fell in love and eventually became married. During their happy life together, they decided to set up a scholarship devoted solely to lefties who attended their alma mater.
There are several regulations for being eligible for this great scholarship. To be eligible, you must be a student at Juniata College, a small liberal-arts college. Before you may apply for the award, you must be a sophomore, junior, or senior and must demonstrate either exceptional academic achievement or financial need. Each year, there are around 5 students chosen to receive scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 dollars. For more information and to get an application, contact the admissions department at Juniata College, or visit the school website at www.juniata.edu.
About Getting a Left-Handed Scholarship
The left-handed scholarships place a great deal of weight on the applicant’s leadership skills. As such, it is important to start as soon as possible on developing and building these vital skills. Luckily, college offers many opportunities to become a leader through campus groups and clubs as well as community organizations. The first step will be to serve on such committees in a follower position and work your way up to leadership.
Once you are a member of campus and local groups, make sure to be active and to contribute to the success of the group’s efforts in every possible way. Once you have worked your way up to a leadership position, make sure to provide guidance and support to those who are working under your leadership. You must also be willing to learn from mistakes and constructive criticism and to see the point of view of others. By doing so, you will build an excellent record of leadership skills over time that will give you a dramatic advantage over other scholarship candidates.
Grades also play an important part in being awarded the left-handed scholarship. From your first semester at college, make sure you keep your study sessions organized and take care to do your best on all assignments and tests. In addition, sign up for classes that will provide you with a balanced schedule. After all, an A from an easy class weighs the same on your GPA as an A from a difficult class.
With the increased attention being garnered by lefties, there is little doubt that there will be further left-handed scholarships available in coming years. For now, however, if you are planning on attending Juniata College, you should definitely make sure to apply for the Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Scholarship.
