Military personnel make many sacrifices to serve the citizens of our country. They face seemingly impossible odds, spend months or years away from family members, and risk their lives, all in the name of patriotism. These unsung heroes deserve the respect and recognition of the people they protect in every way possible. One way our soldiers are being appreciated is through scholarship money for college. If you have made the personal sacrifice necessary to defend our freedom and security, these military scholarships are especially for you:
American Legion Auxiliary Non-Traditional Student Scholarship
These $2,000 military scholarships are available at the rate of one per division each year. To be eligible, applicants must be members of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion. Applicants must have paid dues for at least two years preceding the years of application as well as the calendar year in which they apply. Applicants must be pursuing education at a two- or four-year university or must be undergoing training through a certified trade, technical, or professional program. AMVETS National Scholarship Program
The AMVETS military scholarships are valued at $4,000 over a four-year period. To be eligible for the funding, applicants must be veterans of the United States military and must be U.S. citizens. In addition, applicants must demonstrate financial need and authorize AMVETS to publicize award information. To apply, candidates must submit a copy of honorable discharge or a certification letter showing current service and eligibility for release before school attendance. Candidates must also submit official transcripts from high school or college, as applicable. Applicants must also submit a complete, signed copy of a 1040 tax form, copy of FAFSA, and an essay detailing what higher education means to the student. Additional required documents include an acceptance letter or current student status from an accredited college or university, proof of college costs, and a resume of all awards, volunteer service, military duty, and employment for the past four years. Daniel Drevnick Memorial Fund
In order to qualify for these military scholarships, applicants must reside in Minnesota or have been based in Minnesota, must have served since September 11, 2001, and must have completed basic and advanced individual training. If the applicant no longer serves, he or she must submit proof of honorable discharge. In addition, applicants must be enrolled in a law enforcement program. Qualified applicants must include a written essay and completed official application. For further information, visit www.heroathome.org.
Military Order of the Purple Heart Scholarship
These military scholarships are available to Purple Heart recipients who are members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Alternatively, applicants may be the spouse, widow, or direct lineal descendants of the MOPH or of a service member killed in action or who died from wounds received in action. To be eligible, applicants must be graduates or graduating seniors of accredited high schools or accepted as full-time undergraduate students at a U.S. university, college, or trade school. In addition, students must have at least a 2.75 GPA and be U.S. citizens. To apply, candidates must submit a completed application, a 200-300 word essay, two recommendation letters, and a $15.00 processing fee. All materials are due by February 13. Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society
The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society provides numerous military scholarships to qualified applicants. There are scholarships for children and spouses of active duty and retired Sailors and Marines, children and spouses of Sailors and Marines killed in action, combat wounded Sailors or Marines, active divers, and more.
