Pursue Your Dream with the SMART Scholarship

Do you dream of working for the Department of Defense? Would you love to be on the cutting edge of the new technologies that will keep our country safe and on top? If so, the SMART Scholarship is everything you could ever want.

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be at least 18 years of age by August 1 of the application year. In addition, applicants must be available to work summer internships at Department of Defense laboratories, and be willing to accept employment with the DoD after graduation. Applicants must be students in good standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA and pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, oceanography, nuclear engineering, operations research, physics, electrical engineering, geosciences, industrial and systems engineering, information sciences, materials science and engineering, mathematics, biosciences, aeronautical and astronautical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, chemistry, computer and computational sciences, or cognitive, neural, and behavioral sciences. All students must be enrolled in a regionally accredited U.S. university of college and hold a GED or high school diploma.

Security Clearance

Students and their parents must be U.S. citizens in order to gain the appropriate security clearance. If the parents are not U.S. citizens, the program will make every effort to make placements without restrictions. Any applicant who fails to obtain and keep security clearance will be dismissed from the program.

Awards and Benefits

Students accepted into the program will receive full tuition and related fees, excluding such costs as meal plans, parking, and housing. In addition, they will receive a stipend of between $25,000 and $38,000 a year, amount to be determined by type of degree and award length. Recipients will also receive paid summer internships, a book allowance of $1,000 per year, a health insurance allowance of $1,200 per year, mentoring services, and employment placement with the Department of Defense upon graduation.
