Studying Abroad Scholarships

Our world is continuing to shrink and it is more important than ever to have a complete education that includes knowledge of other languages, cultures, and societies. One of the best ways to get this complete education is through studying abroad. These opportunities can be extremely expensive, however, and would be beyond the reach of many students without the help of study abroad scholarships. If you would like to find a way to finance your study abroad experience, try some of these great scholarship opportunities:

AIFS International Scholarships

Every semester, AIFS provides 40 $1,000 study abroad scholarships to students who have a high level of academic ability and who successfully complete an essay. In order to apply, you must complete an application along with the essay and must also submit official transcripts, an academic reference, and a $95 application fee. Deadlines for application are April 15 for fall and September 15 for spring. To win the scholarship, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate leadership as well as interest in international and/or multicultural issues. Boren Scholarship

The Boren study abroad scholarships offer as much as $20,000 to U.S. Students enrolled in an undergraduate program. The purpose of these scholarships is to allow students to study in world regions that are important to U.S. Interests such as Asia, Africa, Eurasia, Eastern and Central Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. While recipients may come from any academic background, they share a common interest in studying languages that are not widely taught. In order to be eligible, applicants must be U.S. Citizens, high school graduates, and currently enrolled in an undergraduate program. The deadline for application is February 15. Fund for Education Abroad

The purpose of this organization is to provide increasing opportunities for American students to receive quality, intensive education while studying abroad. They offer opportunities to all, but have preference for underrepresented groups. Awards can be as high as $10,000 a year. In order to be eligible, students must be U.S. Citizens, must be a current student of a college or university, must apply for a study abroad program that will earn university credit, and must be prepared to study abroad for at least 4 weeks. In addition, he or she must be willing to work with the FEA on campus when returning to the U.S. Applications must be submitted from October to November each year. LIVFund

LIVFund offers scholarships to students who wish to study in one of 21 Latin American countries including Belize, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, and more. The competition is available to anyone who is at least 18 years old and who wishes to study, intern, or volunteer in Latin America. Applications will be accepted up to 6 months before the start of the study abroad program. Once an award is received, the recipient must agree to post a minimum of three entries on the LIVFund blog that will tell about their experience. Since studying abroad is so important to a complete education for modern students, it is important to apply for all study abroad scholarships for which you are eligible. These great opportunities allow even the most financially restricted students the chance to realize their dreams and to study while immersed in another culture for a period of time.
